Vineyard Walking Tour

Old Vineyards Stop

You have made it to the western edge of our farm. You have walked through a valley between two vineyards, one new (more on that later) and one in the process of being torn out and replanted.

To the South you will notice what appears to be a vineyard in disrepair. However, in reality it is a vineyard being torn out and replanted. The old vineyard, which was a grape called Seyval Blanc, ran in a diagonal direction. This was done for erosion mitigation and to optimize row length. This vineyard provided decades of productive growing seasons. However, the years of harsh winters and Father Time eventually render even the most reliable vineyards less than great. Depending on varietal, weather, location and a host of other factors, we expect a vineyard to be productive for 18-40+ years.

Modern vineyards tend to be planted in a North/South configuration, which maximizes the available solar energy leading to a more productive plant. This is one of many upgrades we will make when replanting this area. We will also tend to use taller trellis systems closer spacing between plants.

To continue head to the far West property line and take a left, which will have you heading South.
